Language Preservation

The Lakota Dakota Nakota Language Summit was created by Tusweca Tiospaye in 2008 in an effort to unite the Oceti Sakowin, Seven Council Fires of the Lakota Dakota Nakota Oyate, also known as the Great Sioux Nation, in efforts to keep the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota languages alive.

Today it has become an international Native language summit with tribes from across the United States and Canada taking part as participants working to revitalize their own tribal languages and as presenters sharing how they have been successful in their work to keep their language strong and flourishing. Gathering Thunder Foundation is a proud to sponsor this important annual summit.

In 2022, Gathering Thunder Foundation was honored to help keep Native American Languages alive and well and pleased to be a sponsor of Anishiinaabemowin, a vital language program through the Native American Education Program and Grand Rapids Public Schools.

In 2021, Gathering Thunder Foundation was given the wonderful opportunity to purchase copies of “The Mikomis Book” for the Turtle Mountain Healthy Living Coalition in North Dakota and was happy to assist the Youth Book Drive campaign for the Cochiti and Santo Domingo Schools in New Mexico.
